Major Ballast Tank Refurbishment Projects in China

Four major ballast tank refurbishment projects have recently been completed in China, totalling over 100,000m². The tanks were originally coated in 2002 and now required to be refurbished due to excessive wear and tear damage.

The tanks were hydroblasted to WJ-3 standard before one stripe coat and one full coat of solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant epoxy Epo-chem™ RS 500P were applied.

Substantial time and cost savings were achieved by utilising hydroblasting, as opposed to costly and labour-intensive abrasive blasting. Abrasive blasting is a very time consuming and expensive process which has large equipment requirements and involves a lengthy setup time. Hydroblasting is a much more environmentally and applicator friendly method which significantly reduces health & safety and fire hazards.

By utilising hydroblasting, it additionally allowed other work within the vicinity during the dry docking to continue without disruption; resulting in further time and cost savings being achieved.

The unique characteristics of Epo-chem™ RS 500P allow the coating to be applied immediately after surface preparation, with zero downtime as RS 500P exhibits outstanding adhesion to rusty or poorly prepared and wet surfaces; a factor which once again resulted in time and cost savings being achieved. Quick back-in-service times can also be achieved as RS 500P can ‘continue to cure’ underwater.
