OVERVIEW

The ballast tanks of the cargo vessel required a full refurbishment of over 6,000m² after the original coatings had failed.

CHALLENGE

Significant sections of the ballast tanks were showing severe corrosion, with many of the hard-to-reach areas suffering most.

There was also a very limited timescale for completion of this project, with grit blasting not permissible.

SOLUTION

Water jetting – to WJ-3 standards – was utilised as the surface preparation method.

One stripe coat of solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant epoxy RS 500P was then applied, followed by one full coat of RS 500P @ 200µm.

In some localised areas, where most of the existing paint was still adherent, one primer coat of RS 500P was applied, followed by one topcoat of solvent-free, wet tolerant epoxy RA 500M @ 250µm.

OUTCOME

The work programme was successfully completed within the timeframe given and to the satisfaction of all concerned: Owner, Classification Society and Shipyard.
