Cargo Hold Refurbishment
OVERVIEW
The Ore Carrier was dry-docking in China to undergo a full refurbishment.
One of the vessel’s cargo holds required to have 10-15% steel replacement, with the remainder of the hold requiring to be re-coated.
CHALLENGE
There could be no disruption to other ongoing work during the dry-docking. Grit blasting, therefore, could not be utilised and a solvent-free coating system was required for application.
SOLUTION
Water jetting was utilised as the surface preparation method. One primer coat of solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant Epo-chem™ RS 500P was then applied, followed by one topcoat of solvent-free, wet tolerant, glassflake reinforced Epo-chem™ RA 500M.
OUTCOME
Utilising water jetting and a solvent-free coating system ensured the client substantial time and cost savings, as other refurbishment work could continue nearby without disruption.
Additional time and cost savings were achieved as there was no requirement for encapsulation or scaffolding.
This preparation and coating solution allowed the vessel to return to charter much quicker than would have been possible if a conventional paint system was used.
