CASE STUDY

Diesel Fuel Tank Lining

Client: Niugini Oil Company

Industry: Petrochemical

Scope: Diesel Fuel Tank Lining

Date: February 2010

Location: Papua New Guinea

Products: RS 500P, RG 500 & RA 500M

OVERVIEW

One of Niugini Oil Company’s (NOC) galvanised zinc coated sectional bolted tanks required a new tank lining system after the original coating had perished in several places and fuel was seeping through the joints. There was also severe corrosion on the floor of the tank.

CHALLENGE

An initial challenge for the NOC was to find a protective coating system suitable to be applied and function under tropical conditions. Working in daylight with high temperatures (up to 65ºC inside the tank), in high humidity and within a given time-frame also added to the difficulties of this project.

SOLUTION

The surfaces were firstly grit blasted to Sa 2.5 before being swept clean and vacuumed. One coat of wet & rust tolerant Epo-chem™ RS 500P was then applied. All joints and bolted areas were coated with flexible, solvent-free epoxy Epo-flex™ RG 500 to close the seeping holes. This was followed by two coats of solvent-free, wet tolerant Epo-chem™ RA 500M .

OUTCOME

The project was completed on time, with no delays and the client was highly satisfied with the final outcome. Working in adverse weather conditions has no effect on the performance of the Chemco system.

BENEFITS

• Solvent-free
• Reduced H&S and Fire Precaution
• No humidity or dew point restrictions
• No over-coating limitations
• Excellent resistance to diesel fuel
• System can be applied in adverse weather conditions
