Waste Oil Tank Refurbishment

Client: Cruise Ship

Industry: Marine

Scope: Waste Oil Tank Refurbishment

Date: October 2016

Location: At Sea

Products: RE 500P & RW 500

A waste oil tank onboard a cruise vessel had to be refurbished as the existing coating system was suffering from severe corrosion damage. This was due to the harsh chemical and high temperature (100°C) environment the tank lining had been subjected to.

This project was required to be undertaken whilst the vessel was at sea. Therefore a solvent-free solution which could offer long-term maintenance-free protection had to be utilised as there could be no disruption to the normal operating services of the vessel. The new coating system also had to have resistance of temperatures up to 100°C.

The waste oil tank was water jetted (500 bar) to remove all surface contamination and oily residues. Slurry blasting (Sa 2) and mechanical preparation methods were then used to prepare the substrate. One stripe coat and one full coat of solvent-free, surface (rust) tolerant epoxy Novolac primer Epo-chem™ RE 500P was applied. This was followed by one stripe coat and full coats of solvent-free epoxy Novolac topcoat Epo-chem™ RW 500.

The project was successfully completed whilst at sea and with no disruption to the working vessel. Substantial time and cost savings were achieved by utilising this unique coating system whilst the vessel was in operation.

• Solvent-free
• Excellent chemical and high temperature resistance
• Ease of decontamination (no cargo contamination)
• No dry-docking requirements
• No disruption to normal operating functions of the vessel
• Long-term maintenance-free protection
