OVERVIEW

The chemical cargo tanks on-board the chemical tanker were suffering from severe corrosion damage and had to be refurbished.

CHALLENGE

The client required a new coating system with the capability of handling extremely aggressive chemicals operating at high temperatures. There was also a short time frame for project completion due to the quantity of tanks required to be refurbished during the dry-docking programme.

SOLUTION

For areas where a full refurbishment was required, the cargo tanks were grit blasted to Sa 2½ standard. Furthermore, areas which required to be spot repaired where mechanically prepared to St 3 standard. This was followed by one primer coat of solvent-free, Novolac epoxy Epo-chem™ RE 500P. To complete the coating system, one stripe coat and two topcoats of solvent-free, glassflake Novolac epoxy Epo-chem™ RW 500 was applied.

OUTCOME

The project was successfully completed within the given time frame. The fast post curing of the Chemco system was considered a major time and cost saving advantage.

BENEFITS

• Solvent-free
• No grit blasting requirements for spot repair work
• Excellent chemical and high temperature resistance
• Reduced contract duration and downtime
• Ease of decontamination (no cargo contamination)
